For six years I wrote a short history
article in the monthly parish magazine,
The Pelican. One of the articles is
shown in the column opposite.

parish information which they would like
recorded (for present and future
generations to share) then please get in

ACKLINGTON HISTORY SLOT
The Storm of 1886
Weather forecasters have warned us that we could be in
for a severe winter this year. Readers may be interested
to know about the great snow storm which hit the region
exactly one hundred and twenty years ago. The snow was
so bad that the main London to Edinburgh railway line
was blocked at Acklington and passengers had to be dug
out. The two pictures below (taken from wood engravings
of the event) were printed in an edition of the
Illustrated London News in 1886. Letís hope history does
not repeat itself!
I wonder how many readers know about the daring
Acklington mail-bag robbery which also made newspaper
headlines.Ö.. more on this most sensational story next
month (I just hope you can stand the suspense).
Meanwhile, if anyone has any interesting photographs,
stories or information which would help me with my
research into the history of Acklington Parish, I would
be very pleased to hear from them.
